Every few years a bride tells me she wants a style with no product at all, because a friend said product is what makes hair look crunchy in photographs. I understand the instinct, and I want to gently correct it, because the opposite is true.
Product is not what makes hair look stiff. Too much of the wrong product, applied badly, is what does that. Hair with nothing in it looks flat by noon in Florida and disappears in a photograph, because fine hair with no texture reads as one shapeless block under bright light.
What I actually use, and why. A heat protectant before any tool, because I am about to put 350 degrees near your hair and I would like it to still be healthy for the anniversary photos. A volume mousse or root lift at the base, because that is what gives structure. A texture spray mid-shaft, because that is what makes an updo look lived-in rather than lacquered. And a flexible finishing spray at the end, one that holds without freezing.
That is four products, used lightly. Bride after bride tells me her hair felt like hair all night, which is exactly the goal.
The crunchy look almost always comes from one of three things: spray applied from too close, too much mousse at the root, or a hard-hold hairspray used on soft styles. All fixable, and none of them mean you should skip product entirely.
If you want a style that looks effortless, the effort goes in the prep. inquire and we will talk through what your hair responds to. The Bride Experience, preview included, is $1,000, with full investment details online.
