What the mirror gives you that the camera doesn't: your bathroom mirror is a three-dimensional, self-lit, familiar view. A camera is a single lens flattening three dimensions into two — and the first casualty of that flattening is depth at the crown and the sides. The roundness you see as volume, the lens reads as a shape with no shadow information. Hair "loses" roughly its outer inch of visual body in a photograph. Every bride. Every camera. Physics.
Why your iPhone looks even flatter than the professional shots: phone cameras use wider lenses close to the subject, which exaggerates the center of the face and compresses the sides — the profile volume disappears first. Professional portrait lenses, at proper distance, keep dimension far better. This is also why the same hair looks different in your photographer's gallery than in your cousin's stories. What we build differently because of it: dimension with contrast. Back-combing at the crown even on "smooth" styles, shadow placement through the lengths, texture spray at the root so the silhouette has internal structure — a style built only for the mirror is built a size smaller for the camera.
