The Final Check: What Happens Before Your First Portrait

The last fifteen minutes in the chair, and why they matter most

November 7, 2026

The final check is my favorite fifteen minutes of a wedding day, and almost no bride knows it is coming. It happens after the last bridesmaid, after the makeup, after the dress is on, before the photographer takes the first portrait. It is the moment I stand behind you with a mirror and we both look honestly at what we made.

Here is what I am looking for. Symmetry from the back, because that is the angle in most ceremony photos and nobody checks it. Whether the veil comb is sitting level. Whether any pins are visible at the crown, which happens when a style settles. Whether the front is still soft after an hour of hugging. Whether the nape is clean, because a chignon that looks perfect from the front can look unfinished from behind at a lectern.

Then I fix things without asking. A pin goes in, a section gets a light mist, a tendril gets repositioned so it falls rather than hangs. This is not fussing; it is the difference between a style that is finished and a style that has been styled. Brides never notice it happening, and photographers always notice the result.

I also photograph it. Every bride gets a photo of the finished back of her hair on her phone before I leave the suite. It is not for Instagram, though it often ends up there. It is because if a pin gives way at nine o'clock, you and your planner and any venue stylist can see exactly what it is supposed to look like. Ten seconds of documentation prevents twenty minutes of guessing.

If you are doing a first look, the final check happens before that, not before the ceremony. If you are not, it happens right before you leave the suite. Either way it is the last thing that happens in the chair, and it is the reason I build a cushion into every timeline.

The final check is included in every bridal service, from the Bride Experience down. If you want to know what the whole morning looks like, inquire and I will walk you through it. Pricing for every service is published on the investment page.
