Veil Attachment and Removal Without Wrecking Your Style

The twenty minutes that decide whether you keep it on

November 29, 2026

A veil can be the most beautiful thing in your wedding photographs or the thing you take off after twenty minutes. The difference is almost entirely in how it is attached and when it comes out.

Attachment first. A cathedral veil is heavy, and heavy veils need a base that can carry them. On fine hair, that means a density pad built into the gather point, a metal comb set at an angle, and cross-pins. On thick hair, a well-placed comb with two pins usually holds. If your veil has a blusher layer, the comb needs to sit further forward, which changes where the style's weight should go.

Removal is the moment nobody plans. A veil pulled out of a finished updo can take the front section with it. The fix is a two-stage attachment: the veil on its own comb, and the style anchored separately, so removing one does not disturb the other. I always demonstrate the removal to the bride and to whoever is helping her.

The reception decision. Many brides remove the veil before the entrance, which is wise for dancing. Some keep it through dinner. If you are going to remove it, add a beautiful pin or comb underneath so the back looks finished rather than abandoned.

Length and venue. A cathedral veil in a garden with wind is a beautiful liability. Talk to your photographer about whether the long veil shot happens before the ceremony, when the wind and the light are most controllable.

We set and photograph the veil at your preview, with the removal rehearsed. Inquire with your date.
