Here is the honest guide. A 1.25-inch barrel gives you the wave you see in most bridal editorial: a soft S-shape with volume at the root and a relaxed bend at the ends. It is the safest choice for almost every bride and the one I recommend most often.
A 1.5-inch barrel gives a looser, beachier wave with less volume and more natural fall. Beautiful on long hair, and beautiful on a bride who wants to look undone on purpose. It is also the worst choice for fine hair, because a loose wave on fine hair becomes a slight bend within two hours in Florida air.
A 1-inch barrel gives a defined, tighter curl that brushes out into a proper wave. This is the choice when you want the wave to actually last, because more curl means more shape to lose. For humid months and long ceremonies, I go to the 1-inch and brush out.
Two technique notes that matter more than the tool. First, section smaller than you think, about an inch and a half, and take smaller sections near the face. Second, pin each curl while it cools, then release. That single step is the difference between waves that last to the reception and waves that last to the first hug.
