Swimming With K-Tip Extensions: The Three Rules

K-tips and swimming is the question every bride who belongs to a club, lives on the water, or has a pool in the backyard asks me. The answer is yes, with three conditions.

The problem: chlorine strips moisture from hair faster than anything except bleach. Extension hair has no scalp and no oil supply, so it has nothing to replace what the pool takes. Three swims a week without protection and your extensions will feel like straw by week six.

The fix, condition one: wet the hair with fresh water before you get in the pool. Saturated hair absorbs less chlorine. It sounds too simple to matter and it matters enormously.

Condition two: a leave-in with silicone or a bond treatment applied before swimming. Not because it seals the hair, that is a myth, but because it creates a layer that the chlorine reacts with first.

Condition three: wash immediately after. Not an hour later, not after lunch. Cool water, sulfate-free shampoo at the scalp, conditioner on the length, and a leave-in while damp. The longer chlorine sits, the more it does.

What to do about the ocean: salt water is gentler than chlorine but harder on bonds. Rinse after, always, and comb through with conditioner before you dry.

What to avoid entirely: hot tubs, and any pool that has just been shocked. Both will turn blonde extension hair green or brassy faster than a full summer of normal swimming.

For brides, the planning point: if you have an install four weeks before the wedding and you swim, get one maintenance check at week three. Chlorine damage shows up at the bond line first, and it is fixable early.
