Some weddings have a nine a.m. ceremony. Some have a six a.m. first look before a sunrise vow. Morning weddings are a different animal, and they are quietly becoming one of our favorite kinds of bookings because the hair is styled in cool air, with no afternoon humidity to fight.

Here is the honest arithmetic. A sunrise ceremony at seven means hair finished by six fifteen, which means the first party member is in the chair at three thirty in the morning. That is a real start time. Most weddings with more than four people getting hair need a second artist, and we are frank about that in the quote rather than springing it later.

The advantage is enormous though. Hair styled at four in the morning in a cool, dark room holds better than hair styled at noon in July. The air is kind, the room is quiet, and there is time for the finish rather than a scramble.

The practical tips we give every early bride: sleep with your hair dry and product-free, shower the night before rather than the morning of, and have coffee and food in the room before anyone sits down. A bride who has eaten is a bride whose hands are steady, and a mother of the bride who has had coffee is a different person entirely.

The lighting is the other consideration. Sunrise ceremonies are backlit, so we build slightly stronger definition at the face and choose a style that reads in silhouette. A soft chignon or a low pony photographs better in backlight than a loose wave set.
