Wedding Hair Static: The Fixes That Actually Work

Why hairspray makes it worse, and the two-minute fix that works

November 19, 2026

The question I get asked most in October and November, usually with a slight groan: what do I do about static? Florida winter is dry enough, in the two or three weeks it lasts, that hair starts standing up, and it undoes a beautiful style in seconds.

The problem: static is friction plus dry air. Central heat, wool coats, car seats, and the dry snap that comes through in January. Fine hair and blonde hair are the most susceptible, which is unfair because those are also the hair types that show every flyaway.

The first fix is not a product. It is a dryer sheet, rubbed lightly over the surface of the hair from mid-length down. It sounds like a grandmother's trick and it works because it neutralizes the charge. Keep one in the touch-up kit.

Product fix: a small amount of light oil or a leave-in cream, applied to the palms and smoothed over the surface. Heavier products weigh the hair enough to stop the charge but can flatten it. Two drops, distributed through the hands first, is the whole method.

What not to do: hairspray. Spray adds a film that creates more friction and, in dry air, more static. The instinct to spray is the wrong instinct.

Environmental fix for the morning: a humidifier in the getting-ready room if you have one, or simply a kettle of hot water. It sounds absurd and it changes the room. I have styled in Palm Beach ballrooms in January that were bone dry and watched perfectly good waves lift off the head.

For winter weddings specifically, I choose styles with a little weight at the root and finishes with a cream base rather than a spray base. Static lives on the surface, so a surface with some slip does not hold a charge.

If you are marrying in the dry window, inquire and I will plan around it. The Bride Experience is $1,000, and see the full investment.
