Soft waves are the most requested bridal hairstyle in Palm Beach County and the one most brides are disappointed by, because what they pinned is not a hairstyle. It is a lighting condition.
Here is the honest version. The waves in that photograph were set on hair that was already smooth, blown out with tension, and then wrapped on an iron and pinned to cool before being brushed out. That is a thirty to forty minute process on a bride, longer if the hair is fine. Nobody got those waves by curling a few sections and shaking them out, and if an artist tells you they can, they are describing a different result than the photo you brought.
What actually matters: the blowout under the set. A wave built on a flat, unblown foundation collapses within an hour in Florida. A wave built on a smooth, tension-dried foundation holds its shape through the ceremony and the portraits.
The set itself matters too. Sections wrapped away from the face give a softer, more romantic result. Sections wrapped toward the face give a more defined, retro result. Both are correct; they are different looks, and I make brides choose at the preview rather than assuming.
And the humidity answer is not more spray. It is a humidity-blocking prep before the blow dry, a proper cool set, and a light finish. Product stacked on top of a wave makes it crunchy, which is the opposite of the softness you wanted.
Bring the photo and I will tell you exactly how it gets built, and how long it takes. Inquire with your date.
