Every bride asks whether her hair should match her sisters' or her mother's hair in the family photos. It is a thoughtful question and the answer is almost always no, with one exception.
The reason not to match is that matching hair reads as a uniform, and a family is not a uniform. What makes family portraits beautiful is that each woman looks like a distinct person who belongs together. If the mother of the bride has a short, elegant crop and the bride has a soft chignon, that contrast is the photograph. Two similar updos look like an accident.
What should match instead is finish level. Everyone polished, everyone at a similar level of formality, nobody in a casual style next to someone in black tie. That is the harmony that matters, and it is invisible when it works.
The one exception is color. If the bride is a warm blonde and her mother is a cool ash blonde, they will read slightly off beside each other in photographs. That is not a hair-style problem and it is not worth solving. A photographer can correct for it, and the relationship matters more than the tone.
The other thing worth coordinating: height. If three women in the front row all have high volume, the back row disappears. Vary the heights deliberately. It is the single most useful thing you can do for a group portrait.
The Bride Experience is $1,000, and mother-of-the-bride hair is $225 per person as part of the party. Details are on the investment page. Inquire and include your family in the plan.
