Sea salt spray is the most over-prescribed product in bridal hair. It is also, used correctly, one of the best. The distinction is entirely about where in the process it goes, and almost nobody gets that right at home.

Salt spray adds grit. Grit creates friction, friction creates volume, and volume is what makes a braid or a twisted updo look like it has body instead of like it has been glued down. That is the whole job. It is a foundation product, applied to damp hair before anything else, mid-shaft to ends.

Hairspray is the opposite. It is a surface product. It locks a shape you have already built. Applied early, it prevents you from building at all. Applied late, in thin layers, it is what keeps a chignon intact through a sea breeze and a receiving line.

The failure I see constantly: a bride preps with salt spray, then uses more salt spray on the finished style to add texture, and the whole thing goes limp within an hour because salt pulls moisture from the air.
