A bride once asked me to make her hair look like she had spent the morning on a boat. I said we could absolutely do that, and then spent an hour on the least nautical work of my season.
Boat hair, beach hair, salt-spray texture. It is the most requested aesthetic in Palm Beach County and the most misunderstood. Real salt air makes hair stiff and tangled. The look people want is sea air in a photograph, which is a texture, not a condition.
How I build it. Start with prep that adds grip without weight: a light volumizer at the root, nothing heavy on the mid-lengths. Dry with a round brush to get shape, then use a one-inch wand alternating directions for irregular bend. The irregularity is the whole point. Uniform curls read as styled.
Then I let everything cool completely, so the shape holds through Florida humidity. Then I break the waves with my fingers, texture spray mid-shaft, and press a small amount of oil over the surface.
The final move is arrangement: a loose side part, one side tucked behind the ear, two pieces pulled forward at the cheek. That is what turns waves into a look.
On extensions: K-tips make this dramatically easier, because they give the waves weight and mass. Fine-haired brides get a thinner version of this texture without them, which is fine, it just reads more delicate.
