Salt air is the defining hair condition of Palm Beach County, and I have spent fifteen years learning exactly what it does. Here is the honest science, and the routine that works, in plain language.
What salt does. Salt is hygroscopic, which means it pulls moisture. On hair, that has two effects: it roughs up the cuticle, which creates grit and dullness, and it draws water from the hair shaft, which leaves it dry. Dry, rough hair then grabs moisture from the humid air, and that is what we experience as frizz. So salt damage and frizz are the same problem wearing two hats.
What to do about it, in order. Rinse with fresh water after swimming or a beach walk, because salt sitting on the hair keeps working. Then condition, and condition more than you think. A leave-in on damp hair is not optional here. Then seal, with a light oil through the mid-lengths and ends.
What not to do. Do not over-wash. Frequent shampooing strips the oils that protect the cuticle, and salt-air hair needs those oils more than clean-feeling hair needs to feel clean. Every other day is plenty for most brides.
One more: a weekly mask does more for salt-exposed hair than any styling product. It is the least glamorous advice I give and the most effective.
