The problem: your colorist offers you a touch-up two weeks before the wedding, you say yes because it feels safer, and then your roots are still processing and slightly warm on the day. Or you wait, and by the ceremony you have a visible line in every photograph with your hair parted.
The rule I give every bride: root touch-up ten to fourteen days before the wedding, and not one day closer than seven. Ten days gives the color time to settle, the tone to stop looking fresh-from-the-brush, and any slight warmth at the root to calm down. It also gives you a cushion if something needs correcting.
Why not three days before: fresh root color photographs cooler and flatter than settled color, and colorists themselves will tell you the shade reads differently on day one. You have also removed your ability to fix anything that goes wrong. A correction on the Wednesday before a Saturday wedding is a stressful afternoon nobody needs.
What if you are not coloring at all: then the answer is a gloss, not a touch-up. A clear or tinted gloss at the two-week mark adds shine and blends the root transition without any commitment. It is the single best thing a natural-color bride can do for wedding photographs.
What about your last haircut: four weeks out, not two. Two weeks and the shape has not settled. One week and every layer is sharp and new, which reads slightly severe in an updo.
The combination that works: haircut at four weeks, gloss or root touch-up at two weeks, nothing but care after that. It is boring advice and it is correct.
