Private estates are the fastest-growing wedding venue category in Palm Beach County, and they are also the least documented. There is no venue coordinator, no house rules, and no one to tell you what the light is like at five o'clock.
I have worked enough estate weddings now to have a checklist, and I give it to every bride marrying at a private home.
First, walk the property at your ceremony hour. Light at 10 a.m. and light at 5 p.m. are different venues. Stand where you will be photographed and look at your own shadow. If it is hard and short, you are in midday light and every product film will show.
Second, find the getting-ready room. It needs north or east light, an outlet, a door, and enough floor for two chairs. If the best room is the laundry, that is fine. Function beats aesthetics on a wedding morning.
Third, ask about air conditioning. Old Palm Beach houses have gorgeous rooms and inconsistent cooling. A bride getting ready in a warm room with no airflow will have a style that softens before the ceremony starts.
Fourth, plan the walk. Estate ceremonies are usually in a garden or on a lawn, and the walk from the house is often longer and rougher than the bride expects. Heels plus gravel plus a train equals a ten-minute delay. Build it in.
