Every bride brings me a photo of waves on Instagram and says she wants exactly that. I love that she has a vision. I also have to explain why some of those photos are physically impossible in Florida, and I would rather do it at the preview than on the morning.
What the photo actually shows. Most of those perfect loose waves were shot in a studio, in low humidity, on hair that had been set with a large barrel and then broken up by hand in the final thirty seconds before the shutter. That is the entire secret. The wave is not the product of a technique you can recreate at home. It is the product of a very narrow window.
What is achievable. A very good approximation. I set the wave properly, in sections, on cooled hair, and then I break it. The result holds significantly better than what you see in the photo, because I am building it for a nine-hour day and the photo was built for a nine-second shot.
What is not achievable outdoors in August. Genuinely loose, brushed-out waves with no hold, on a beach, at two in the afternoon. I can give you softness. I cannot give you a style that defies physics, and I will not pretend I can.
So bring the photo. Bring three. I will tell you honestly which parts are possible, which parts we can approximate, and which parts we should replace with something better.
