The Pelican Yacht Club sits at the mouth of the Fort Pierce Inlet with a view that makes the whole room feel like the deck of a ship. It is a genuinely underrated venue, and it comes with a genuinely specific hair brief: water on three sides and a breeze that has crossed nothing but open ocean.

Wind is the entire design problem here. A ceremony on the terrace at five in the afternoon will have a steady fifteen miles an hour off the inlet, and anything not pinned is going to move. My rule for this venue is close to absolute: no loose front section, no soft tendrils, no style that depends on a curl holding its shape.

What does work is a low, structured shape with a hard part and a finished surface. A chignon at the nape. A twisted pony. A swept side style with the volume pinned rather than sprayed. All of them can take a gust and look like they were designed for it.

The interior is nautical in the best sense: dark wood, brass, low warm light. That lighting rewards shine more than daylight does, so a light gloss is fine here where I would skip it at a beach venue.
