But here's the thing about understated luxury: it only works if the execution is perfect. A messy bun isn't understated, it's just messy. The relaxed styles that photograph beautifully in a room like that are actually the most technically demanding things I do.
So let me tell you what "effortless" really costs.
It costs preparation. Hair that's been conditioned properly for six weeks behaves differently than hair that's been over-washed and under-treated. It costs a proper blowout foundation, because a low chignon built on uncooperative hair will never look soft.
It costs pin work. The most expensive-looking updos I build have thirty to forty pins in them, all hidden. From six feet away it looks like the hair is holding itself up.
It costs restraint on shine. In a low-lit, warm room, a high gloss turns yellow in photographs. A satin finish reads as healthy.
And it costs the right hour. Old Palm ceremonies usually run late afternoon, which gives us a morning with no clock pressure. I'd rather have that than a rushed noon call time any day.
