A hair artist friend of mine once described the difference between syrups, oils, and serums as the difference between a coat, a polish, and a treatment. I have used that framing ever since, because brides get confused about which one their hair actually needs.
Oils are a finish. They add shine, reduce friction, and tame flyaways. They do not add moisture. If your hair is dry and you add oil, you are coating dry hair. It looks better and stays dry.
Serums are lighter and usually silicone-based. They smooth the surface and make hair easier to comb. Great on mid-lengths before styling, useless as a repair.
Treatments, masks, and syrups actually penetrate. A mask left on for ten minutes with heat does something structural. A syrup or essence is lighter but still absorbs. This is what you use when the hair itself is compromised.
So the order of operations for a bride six weeks out: treatments first, once a week. Serum on styling days for slip. Oil at the finish for shine. Almost nobody needs all three in the same routine, and layering them is how hair ends up heavy.
The test I give clients: if your hair feels dry when wet, it needs a treatment. If it feels fine when wet and dull when dry, it needs a finish. If it tangles, it needs a serum.
One warning. Do not start a new treatment two weeks before the wedding. The week before is for maintenance, not experiments.
