Ocean Reef and Key Largo Wedding Hair: Upper Keys Planning

Ocean Reef and Key Largo sit at the top of the Keys, an hour and a half from Palm Beach on a good day and considerably longer on a Friday in season. Brides who marry there usually do it because they love the water and the pace, and both change how a hair morning works.

What the location asks of hair: real wind tolerance. The Upper Keys are windy in a way Palm Beach is not, because there is nothing between you and the Atlantic and nothing between you and Florida Bay. A ceremony on the bay side at sunset gets a steady breeze that will move any style that is not built for it.

The style answer: braided bases, low chignons, tucked shapes. Anything with a defined outline. I avoid high, airy updos there entirely, and I avoid loose face-framing pieces.

The humidity difference: the Keys run higher humidity than the mainland most of the year, and the salt content in the air is higher too. That combination makes smooth styles harder to maintain and textured styles easier. Lean textured.

Timeline notes: this is the one location where I build the whole morning around the drive. Card Sound Road or US-1, either way it is a haul, and a Friday afternoon in season can double the time. Brides usually get ready on-site or at a rental in Key Largo, and I plan to be there well before the first appointment needs me.

For a two-day wedding weekend: I stay. It is the only sensible way to handle a Friday welcome party and a Saturday ceremony in the Keys.
