It is a real worry and it is easy to solve. The rule I use is that the bride owns the volume and the detail. Mother of the bride hair should be beautiful, polished, and slightly more restrained. Think a smooth low chignon, a soft set of waves, a French twist with clean edges. Not a competing updo, not a trendy style from a reel, not the same soft romantic look as her daughter.

There is a harmony question too. Mothers often want to coordinate without matching, which is the right instinct. I will sometimes echo a texture so the family photographs read as a unit, without anyone looking duplicated.

The practical side matters as much as the aesthetic. Mothers are often in photographs from early afternoon through the last dance, in Florida heat, possibly crying during the toast. A style with hold, a careful hairline, and pins that do not bite will do more for her comfort than any product. If she wears glasses, we plan the temple area deliberately so nothing interferes.
