Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse: How I Actually Use It

I recommend Moroccanoil Volumizing Mousse to brides more often than any other single product, and the reason is boring: it works on almost every hair type.

Most mousses fall into two camps. One adds so much body that hair feels stiff and photographs like a shell. The other is so light that it does nothing after an hour. This one sits in the useful middle. It gives the root enough support to hold shape without making the strand feel coated.

Here is how I use it.

On damp hair, root to mid-length. Not the ends, which will get heavy and tacky.

For fine hair, one pump is enough for the whole head. For thick hair, two or three. If you can see white in your hair after you've worked it in, you used too much.

Blow-dry upward at the root. The volume comes from the direction of the air and the cooling phase, not from the product sitting there. Mousse gives the hair memory. The dryer gives it the shape.

For a smooth chignon, mousse first, then blow-dry smooth. You get volume at the base and a clean surface.

For waves, mousse at the root, then curl. The curls will hold longer because the root has support.

What it won't do: it won't create lasting curl on its own, and it isn't a heat protectant. You still need protection before an iron.

And the practical reason I love it for weddings: it's forgiving at hour six. Stiff products fail loudly, with visible flakes or stiff sections. This fails quietly, which is all you can ask of a product on a long day.
