Every summer I have the same conversation with a bride in June who swears her extensions were cooler in March. She is not imagining it. Extension hair fades in Florida sun, and it fades faster than the hair still attached to your head, because it has already been through processing before it ever reached you.
Sun is the biggest culprit. UV lifts warmth, and warmth on a cool-toned brunette reads brassy in about eight weeks of regular pool and beach time. Salt water opens the cuticle and lets color slip. Chlorine does the same, more aggressively. Add hard Palm Beach water and heat styling, and you have a tone shift by the time your portraits come around.
My prevention plan is unglamorous and it works. Rinse with fresh water before you swim so the hair absorbs clean water first. Wear a hat. Wash less often, and when you do, use a sulfate-free shampoo at the coolest temperature you can tolerate. A tinted gloss every six to eight weeks keeps the tone from drifting.
If you are already in K-tips, book a color refresh around the six-week mark before a wedding. Full details on sourcing, install, and upkeep live at majesticextensions.com.
For brides planning installs, I build the timeline backwards from the date. Install about six to eight weeks out, refresh tone at four weeks, then nothing but care the final fortnight.
