K-Tip Bonds in Summer Heat: What Actually Happens

Summer is the hardest season on keratin tip extensions in South Florida and almost nobody warns brides about it before they book an install in June. Here is what actually happens to a bond in ninety-degree heat with eighty percent humidity.

Keratin softens with heat and moisture. That is by design, it is what makes the method work, and it is also what makes summer different. A bond near the hairline on a bride who spends an afternoon outside will soften slightly, and a softened bond allows the strand to shift. It does not fall out. It slides, and a slid strand tangles with its neighbor.

What I change for summer installs: I place the front row slightly further back and I use a firmer bond formulation. I also adjust the care instructions, because summer habits are different habits.

The summer rules. Rinse with cool water after any time in the pool or ocean, and do not let salt or chlorine dry in. Do not brush while sweating; wait until the hair is cool and dry. Never apply sunscreen spray above the shoulders. And keep the hair tied loosely at night even if you normally do not, because a warm scalp overnight softens bonds more than brides expect.

Pool chlorine is the bigger problem of the two. It strips the cuticle of extension hair faster than salt does and it makes the ends feel like straw after three swims. A leave-in conditioner from mid-shaft down before you get in the water is genuinely effective protection, and almost nobody does it.
