Key West Wedding Hair: The Drive Comes First

Key West is a four-hour drive or a short flight from Palm Beach, and it is the one place in Florida where the wedding hair brief is genuinely unlike anywhere else. Sea air, constant breeze, coral dust, and a ceremony hour that almost always coincides with the strongest wind of the day.

The conditions are cumulative. Salt in the air sits on the hair and attracts moisture. The breeze means anything loose moves. And the sun is intense enough that a bride standing for portraits will be warm within minutes, which brings the hairline into play.

My approach for the Keys is more structured than brides expect. For a beach ceremony, a low chignon with a hard part or a sleek twisted pony. Both look deliberately undone to a casual eye and are engineered to hold. For a garden or a porch at a guesthouse, a half-up with real backcombing works, because the light there is dappled and forgiving.

The practical thing nobody plans for is the commute. If you are marrying in Key West and getting ready in Key West, that is easy. If you are marrying in Islamorada and flying into Miami, the Overseas Highway can turn a ninety-minute drive into three hours on a holiday weekend. I will not put a wedding morning on that road.

My honest recommendation: for the Keys, book a stylist who is already there, or build a two-night stay into the budget and let me arrive the day before. The drive is the risk, and the risk is not worth saving on a travel fee.
