A January Wedding in Palm Beach: The Hair Notes

January is the best month to marry in Palm Beach and the most underestimated. The light is low and golden all afternoon, the humidity finally drops, and the island is full of people who came specifically to be here. It is also the month brides plan for as if it were July.

The meteorological reality: January mornings can be genuinely cool, sometimes in the fifties, and afternoons reach the mid seventies. A ceremony at four can start in a cardigan and end in sleeveless photographs. That forty-degree swing across a single evening is the whole planning problem.

Hair behaves differently in cool, dry air. It holds a set better than at any other time of year, which is good news. It also goes flat and static more easily, and fine hair can look limp by the reception. I use less silicone, more volume at the root, and I keep a texture mist on hand for the midpoint.

The dry air also means shine products behave. A gloss finish that would turn greasy in June looks beautiful in January. This is the month I will happily use a shine serum.

Socially, January means the island is at capacity. Vendors are booked, restaurants are full, and traffic on South Ocean is not a joke. For a Saturday wedding I plan an extra twenty minutes for every leg of the morning.

One more January specific: many brides come in from the Northeast having just been in heated indoor air for weeks, which leaves hair dry and static-prone. A moisture mask twice a week for the month before fixes most of it.
