Inside My Kit: What Forty Pounds Actually Contains

My kit is a rolling case, two flat cases, and a bag that only contains pins. It weighs about forty pounds and I have rebuilt it six times over fifteen years. Here is what is actually in it, because brides ask constantly and the honest answer is less exotic than expected.

Foundation first: a heat protectant spray, a light oil, a texture mist, and a volume mousse. That is the whole prep layer and it has not changed in a decade. The brands rotate, the categories do not.

Tools: one 1.25-inch curling iron, one 1-inch for tighter bends, a blow dryer with a concentrator nozzle, a round brush, a fine-tooth comb, a tail comb for part lines, and a bristle brush for smoothing. That is it. Anyone who tells you a style requires eleven tools is selling something.

Then the part nobody sees. Fifty hair pins in three lengths, twenty bobby pins matched to four hair colors, clear elastics, a pin mat, and a small spray bottle of water. Pins are where a style lives or dies. I have never once run out and I have come close.

Finishing: a flexible hold spray, a film-forming spray for humidity, a shine serum used sparingly, and a tinted root powder. Plus blotting papers and a matte powder for the forehead, which is not a hair product but does more for a photograph than half of what is.

Emergency: needle and thread in the hair color, a small scissors, clear nail polish for a run in a stocking, stain remover, and a phone charger. Also snacks, because I am a person.

Nothing in there is rare. The value is in knowing which four things to reach for on a given head, in a given room, on a given day. That is the fifteen years.
