Bridal Hair + Headache: How to Fix an Updo That Hurts

It is a tension problem, and tension problems have solutions

November 22, 2026

Brides ask me this in almost every preview, usually quietly, usually around the third time they touch the back of their head: how do I stop my updo from giving me a headache? It is one of the most common and least discussed problems in bridal hair, and it is almost always solvable.

Here is why it happens. An updo pulls in one direction, usually up and back from the crown. When all the tension lives in one place, the scalp underneath reports it within two hours. Add a veil comb, a heavy pin cluster, and a tiara, and you have three separate loads stacking on the same few square inches of scalp.

The fix is distribution. I build styles so weight is spread across the whole head rather than concentrated at the crown. Pins go in at varied angles and depths. Where a style needs real tension for shape, I place that tension at the perimeter, around the hairline and above the ears, where the scalp is far less sensitive than the crown.

The second fix is the veil. I anchor combs at a slight angle rather than straight back, and I test it with the bride turning her head. A veil that drags is a veil that will hurt by the ceremony.

The third fix is honesty during the preview. Tell me it pulls. I would rather rebuild a section three times in a preview than have you miserable at your reception. That is what the preview is for.

Bridal pricing: Bride Experience $1,000, party hair $225 per person, additional on-location hours $400 each. See investment.
