Hair That Will Not Hold a Curl: Four Causes, Four Fixes

Hair that will not hold a curl is the most common complaint I hear, and it is almost always one of four things. Here is how to identify which one you are, because the fixes are completely different.

One: your hair is too clean. Freshly washed, conditioned hair is slippery by design. If your curls fall within two hours, try day-two hair and a texture mist at the root before styling. This solves it for maybe forty percent of the brides who ask me.

Two: your hair is too heavy. Long, thick hair with a lot of product in it pulls its own curl out. The answer is less product, not more, and a smaller section size. A two-inch section will hold a bend. A four-inch section will not.

Three: your hair is genuinely resistant. Coarse, straight, Asian, or very healthy hair sometimes just does not want to take a set. This is not a flaw. It is a texture characteristic. For this hair I use a higher heat, a firmer setting spray applied section by section, and pin curls that cool completely before they are released. Cooling is the step everyone skips and it is the one that does the work.

Four: humidity. If your curls hold until you walk outside and then fall, it was never a technique problem. That is dew point, and the fix is a film-forming spray and a style that does not depend entirely on curl.
