Bachelors and bachelorettes ask me the same question every spring: what should we do for the group, and how do we avoid a four-hour salon marathon the morning of the party?
My answer is a private group booking, and it is easier than most people expect. A group of six for hair is $225 per person per service, and I come to the house or the hotel rather than the other way around. That changes the whole feel of the event: nobody is sitting in a salon chair under fluorescent light, and nobody is driving.
The scheduling trick is to stagger. Six people do not all need to be styled at nine in the morning for an evening party. I start with the people who need to leave first, which is usually whoever is organizing, and stagger the rest across two hours so nobody sits finished and bored.
For bachelorette parties, I push toward styles that hold: braids, low textured knots, sleek ponytails. You are going out, you are probably going to be outside, and you are definitely going to be photographed in a group. Soft waves look lovely for an hour and then flatten.
One thing to plan: group hair for an evening event is usually a late afternoon call. A 3 p.m. start for a 7 p.m. dinner is comfortable and gives everyone a glass of something while they wait.
