Gray roots before a wedding is one of those worries brides whisper rather than ask about, and it deserves a plain answer. There is a version of this problem that costs you two hundred dollars and a version that ruins a morning. The difference is timing.
Root touch-up appointments should land seven to ten days before the wedding. Not five, not three. Color needs a wash cycle or two to settle, and a fresh tint at the hairline is darker than it will be by day four. Photograph a touch-up done forty-eight hours earlier and you can see the difference at the temples.
The riskier question is what to do if you are not coloring. Many brides are not, and the anxiety is misplaced. Gray hair at twenty percent reads as texture in photographs. It is only at high percentages and in a hard center part that it becomes visible, and both of those are styling problems.
Three things I do for brides who are not coloring. I move the part off center, because gray concentrates at the temples and the forehead hairline. I backcomb the front for coverage rather than pulling tight, since tension exposes scalp. And I use a tinted root powder as insurance, which takes four seconds and eliminates the shine of scalp in flash.
One more note. If a bride is considering a first-ever color appointment before her wedding, I gently steer her away. A first-time color four weeks before the biggest photographs of your life is a risk with no upside. Do it six months out or after the honeymoon.
Whatever you decide, tell me at the preview. I plan styles differently when I know I am working around color, and the preview is included in the Bride Experience at $1,000. All pricing is on the investment page.
