Grandmother of the Bride: The Appointment Nobody Plans For

Grandmothers of the bride are the forgotten client in wedding planning, and they are often the most nervous person in the room. Not about the wedding. About being in the photographs.

The problem: an older woman who has worn her hair the same way since 1994 is being asked to sit in a chair and be styled by a stranger, in a room full of activity, on a day with a lot of eyes on her. That is a big ask, and it deserves care.

The fix starts with the question: what do you normally do with it? Then do that, but better. A grandmother who sets her hair every week in rollers does not want a soft wave from a curling iron. She wants her set, done beautifully. A grandmother who wears a low bun wants her bun, with a little more lift at the crown.

What I do technically: a proper set on a hood dryer for women who are used to one. It takes longer and it looks like her. The lift at the crown is the one addition I make without asking, because it flatters every face at every age and it never looks like a change.

What to schedule: grandmothers go first, always. Early in the morning, with the least noise, and with real time. A rushed set on an older woman's hair does not hold.

What to avoid: anything with a strong hold or a wet look. Fine, gray, porous hair goes stiff fast. Light products, gentle heat, and a soft finish.

A practical note for the family: if she is fragile, ask her to come early and then rest. I have styled grandmothers at seven in the morning in a quiet room with coffee, and they arrive at the ceremony delighted.
