The morning of photographs everyone loves, the one with the bride in a robe by a window, takes about four minutes to shoot and ten minutes to set up properly. Most brides do not realize the second number exists.
Here is how I plan it. The robe shot works because of light and simplicity, so the getting-ready space needs a window with soft, indirect light and no clutter in the frame. That means the room is set before anyone sits down: bags moved, robes arranged, hangers hidden, and the good light identified and protected.
Hair timing matters here more than anywhere. The best robe photographs happen when hair is finished but makeup is still in progress, or right after hair is done and before the dress goes on. That window is short, and if the hair runs late, the shot disappears and nobody notices until the gallery arrives.
So I schedule the bride's finish with a deliberate ten-minute buffer before the dress. That buffer has produced some of the best images on my brides' walls, and it costs nothing except planning.
The other detail: hair looks best in those photographs when it is complete, which means the final pins and the finishing spray are done, not pending. A half-finished style photographs like a half-finished style.
