Every December and January, my inbox fills with the same three questions about gala season in Palm Beach. Here they are, answered once, properly.
Question one: how far ahead should I book for a gala? Six to eight weeks is comfortable, four is workable, two is a conversation. Gala season compresses into a handful of weeks, and the good dates go early. If you know your event date, book before Thanksgiving.
Question two: what style actually works for black tie? My answer is a clean, architectural shape. A sleek low chignon, a smooth blowout with real volume at one temple, or a wrapped low pony. Black tie means the hair should look deliberate rather than decorative, and the jewelry carries the sparkle. If you are wearing a statement earring, keep the hair off the ear on that side. Always.
Question three: can you come to my home? Yes. Most gala clients are styled at home or at a hotel suite, and I bring everything. Private event styling runs $225 per person per service, which is the same rate whether it is one person or a group of six.
One thing I would add for gala season specifically: the photographs are almost always indoors, at night, with flash. Flash reveals texture and shine more than daylight does. So I finish with a light oil at the mid-lengths and keep the crown smooth. Texture spray plus flash equals grit, and that is the most common mistake I see in gala hair.
