Fort Lauderdale brides get the best of both worlds: a real city with great hotels and a beach town's wardrobe. The hair brief is more fashion-forward than Palm Beach and less formal, and I enjoy the change of pace every time I drive south.
The first thing to know is that Fort Lauderdale is windier than the island. The beach runs at an angle to the prevailing breeze, and the intracoastal canals create gusts between buildings. Anything loose is a gamble. I plan updos and pinned shapes for beach ceremonies, and I save the soft, brushed waves for indoor receptions in the city.
Second, the venue mix is broader. Las Olas hotels, waterfront estates, yacht clubs, and a growing set of design-led boutique properties. A bride marrying at a modern hotel downtown wants something sharper than a bride marrying at a country club in Boca, and that difference is real. Fort Lauderdale rewards a severe part, a slicked ponytail, a sculptural knot.
Third, consider the drive. If your party is getting ready in Fort Lauderdale and the ceremony is in Palm Beach County, budget an hour plus traffic. I have done that run many times and I-95 does not care about your timeline.
Fourth: humidity is the same as Palm Beach, but the afternoon storms arrive slightly earlier inland. A 5 p.m. outdoor ceremony in July is a genuine risk anywhere in South Florida.
