What survives a Florida evening: sturdy blooms with woody stems and waxy petals. Orchids — cymbidium and phalaenopsis — are the queens; they tolerate heat, hold their shape for hours, and photograph like sculpture. Roses (garden roses especially, wired and taped properly), ranunculus, spray roses, and baby's breath all hold well when conditioned and pinned with water tubes for the longest-wearing pieces. Statice, wax flower, and olive or eucalyptus greenery hold beautifully and give the crown its structure.
What wilts, the honest list: peonies, dahlias, poppies, and gardenias bruise and drop in heat — gardenias also cannot be touched without browning, which makes them terrible candidates for hours of photographs and hugs. Hydrangeas drink through their petals and collapse in dry heat. A peony crown at a June ceremony is a two-hour romance, no more.
The coordination nobody tells you about: your florist and I need to talk. The blooms must arrive conditioned, stems wired and taped, and timed to the styling — not dropped at the venue at noon for a 4 p.m. pinning.
