Islamorada, Key Largo, and Marathon are the realistic day trips. Key West is a four-hour drive each way, which means an overnight, which means a travel quote. I am honest about all of it rather than pretending distance is free.
What the Keys give you in exchange: the best light in Florida, water on both sides, and a genuinely relaxed mood that makes hair easier. Nobody in Islamorada wants a lacquered ballroom updo. They want soft waves, a loose braid, flowers, and hair that looks like it has been near the ocean all day.
The technical challenge is wind. Constant, ocean-driven, and stronger than Palm Beach. Structure underneath, softness on top, and a hairstyle that is secure enough to survive a boat ride if that is on the agenda.
Humidity is also different in the Keys: higher, and steadier. Prep with a smoothing treatment four to six weeks out, and build the style with heat memory.
Logistics that matter: confirm the getting-ready location early, ask whether the rental has air conditioning (some do not), and build in an hour of buffer because the two-lane road to the Keys can surprise you.
