Florida Keys Wedding Hair: What I Insist On Before I Take the Drive

The Florida Keys are the most beautiful place in the state to get married and the worst place to have hair that needs rescuing. I have driven down for Keys weddings for years, and I have a short list of things I insist on before I take one.

First, the wind. Keys wind is not like Palm Beach wind. It is constant, salt-laden, and it comes from every direction over the course of a day. Loose hair is not an option unless the ceremony is fully indoors. Every Keys morning I plan is built on pinned structure: a low chignon, a braided crown, a twisted half-up with a real anchor. The romance comes from softness at the face, never from loose volume.

Second, the salt. Salt air makes hair feel thicker and coarser, which is good for hold and terrible for shine. I use a smoothing base and skip volumizing products entirely. Then I finish with a light mist, because heavy spray plus salt equals a tacky, stiff finish that photographs badly.

Third, logistics. Key Largo is an hour and a half from Palm Beach. Islamorada is two. Key West is nearly four and needs an overnight. I quote travel openly and I will tell you if a morning requires me to come down the night before, because a 4 a.m. drive from the mainland to Islamorada produces a worse result than an honest travel fee.

Fourth, the sun. Midday Keys light is brutal on polished styles because it shows every product film. Morning and late afternoon ceremonies photograph far better, and if you have flexibility, take it.
