Florida Hair Repair Season: The Six-Week Reset

Every winter I get the same email, usually in the second week of October: my hair was fine all summer and now it is breaking. Florida has a hair season nobody warns you about.

The problem: summer is hot and humid, which is uncomfortable but forgiving. Late October through February is warm days and cool nights, low humidity, and full sun. Hair that has been sunned, chlorinated, and heat-styled for five months hits that dry window with nothing left in the tank. Breakage, static, dull ends, split mid-shaft.

The fix is a repair window, not a product. Six weeks of doing less.

Week one and two: cut the heat. One blow-dry a week maximum. Air dry whenever possible, and if you must use heat, drop the temperature and add a heat protectant every time.

Week three and four: a mask once a week, not more. Protein one week, moisture the next. Alternating matters, because hair that gets protein every week goes brittle and hair that gets moisture every week goes limp.

Week five and six: a trim, even just a dusting. Split ends do not repair and they climb the shaft.

What to stop entirely for six weeks: hot tools at 400 degrees, tight ponytails on wet hair, and backcombing. All three do cumulative damage that shows up as breakage in December.

What to start: a silk pillowcase if you do not have one, and a wide-tooth comb instead of a brush on wet hair.

By January the hair behaves differently. By March you have a clean slate for the season.
