A bride once told me her hair looked wrong in every photograph and could not say why. I asked to see two: one from the ceremony in daylight, one from the reception with flash. In the first she looked wonderful. In the second, her style had disappeared.
This is the least understood thing about bridal hair. Flash and daylight show completely different qualities, and a style optimized for one can vanish in the other.
In daylight, contrast and texture do the work. Soft shapes read. Subtle color variation reads. Fine detail reads. A soft, romantic style photographed outdoors at four in the afternoon is in its element.
With flash, everything flattens. Texture is washed out, fine detail disappears, and what remains is silhouette and shine. A soft style with lots of delicate detail can look like a smooth helmet in a dark reception. Conversely, a sculpted style with clear edges and visible shine looks spectacular in flash.
The answer is not to pick one. It is to build a style that has enough structure for flash and enough softness for daylight. Practically, that means defined edges and real shine, plus volume that survives the flattening. A clean part and a glossy finish do more for reception photographs than any additional detail.
