Wedding photography has changed, and hair has to change with it. Most couples now book a photographer who shoots a mix of digital and film, and film sees hair differently than a sensor does.
Film is forgiving of softness and unforgiving of shine. Where a digital image renders a glossy surface as expensive-looking, film renders heavy shine as a white highlight with no detail. That is why brides who look luminous in person can look slightly plastic in film portraits.
The fix is finish, not product removal. I use a light smoothing layer and a matte or satin finishing mist rather than a high-gloss spray for brides shooting film. The texture still reads as polished, but the surface does not blow out in a highlight.
The second difference is contrast. Film compresses highlights and lifts shadows, which means detail in dark hair survives better and detail in very light hair can flatten. If you are very blonde and shooting film, a little extra textural definition in the mid-lengths keeps the shape readable.
Third, and this is practical: ask your photographer what they shoot before your preview. If they are film-forward, tell me. It changes which products I reach for, and it takes ninety seconds to ask.
The Bride Experience is $1,000 with preview included, and details are on the investment page. Inquire and tell me who is shooting your wedding.
