Extension Shedding: What Is Normal and What Is Not

It is not your hair coming out. Here is what is, and when to call.

November 16, 2026

Extension shedding is the question that makes new wearers panic, and the answer is reassuring: some shedding is normal and expected, and the hair that comes out is not yours.

Extension hair is not attached to a scalp, so it does not renew itself. Every strand has a natural lifespan in the bond, and as the keratin softens over a wear cycle, small amounts of hair release. Seeing fifteen or twenty strands in your brush after a wash is normal. Seeing a clump is not.

The most common cause of excessive shedding is mechanical, not chemical. Brushing from the top down. Brushing wet. Sleeping on a tight braid. Using a brush with a hard ball tip at the bond. All of these pull strands out of the bond before their time, and all of them are fixable in one habit change.

The second cause is product in the wrong place. Conditioner or oil worked into the bond area softens the keratin and the strand slips. Keep everything below mid-shaft when you have extensions. This is the rule people break most because it feels unnatural.

The third is heat. A flat iron pressed directly onto a bond will compromise it. Keep heat below the bond line, always, and use a protectant even on the extension hair, because it is real hair and it behaves exactly like yours does.

What to do about it: brush ends up with a loop brush, dry only, twice a day. Wash less, every third day if you can. Book the maintenance appointment at the interval you were given, not a week late. And if you are losing more than a small amount, call rather than waiting. A bond issue caught in week two is a twenty-minute fix. In week six it is a reinstall.
