A bride wrote to me recently that her wedding is in a hotel ballroom, the ceremony is at five, and she wants her hair to look like she just walked in from the beach. I understood the brief immediately, and I also had to explain the tension in it.
The beach look is a specific texture: bend rather than curl, movement, a slightly roughened surface, no visible product. It reads effortless. The problem is that effortless hair is not low-maintenance hair. It is the most product-and-technique-heavy thing I do, because the surface has to look untouched while the structure underneath has to be genuinely secure.
How I get there. Prep with volume at the root and a light smoothing on the lengths, which keeps the hair from going fuzzy without weighing it. Dry with a round brush for shape, then a wand on medium heat for bend, alternating directions so the wave pattern is irregular instead of uniform. Then a texture spray, then I break the waves with my fingers rather than brushing.
Breaking is what makes the difference. A brushed curl is a wave. A broken curl is a beach.
The last step is arrangement: a soft side part, one side tucked, a couple of pieces pulled forward. That asymmetry is what makes it look like a person rather than a hairstyle.
