Bridal hair and makeup have a coordination problem that nobody warns brides about: they are two different artists making a decision about the same face, usually for the first time on the morning of.
If they are on the same team, this is invisible. If they are separate bookings, it is a real risk. I have walked into rooms where the makeup artist was planning a bold, flushed, modern look and the hair plan was soft, romantic, and vintage. Both beautiful. Wrong together.
Here is the coordination we do before the day, and what you should ask for from any team.
One: share the mood board, not just your own board. Send the hair reference to the makeup artist and the makeup reference to the hair artist. Ask each of them, in writing, whether the two live together happily. The answer is usually yes, and the conversation takes four minutes.
Two: agree on the neckline. Makeup sets the tone for the face; hair sets the frame. If the hair is soft and undone, a very structured, graphic makeup can look mismatched. If the hair is architectural, soft makeup can look underdone.
Three: the order. Hair first, then makeup, is the standard because hair products need to settle and makeup has to touch the hairline. But if a bride is doing a slicked-back look, makeup goes first so foundation does not get wiped. It is a small decision that saves a redo.
Four: the same finish vocabulary. If hair is glossy, makeup should have a sheen somewhere. If hair is matte and textured, a heavily glossed face makes the hair look dry by comparison.
Five: one person owns the final check. Usually me. Ten minutes before the dress, hair, makeup, and the veil get one look from one set of eyes.
We work with makeup artists regularly, and inquire if you want us to coordinate a single team so nothing has to be negotiated at dawn.
