Coconut Grove and Coral Gables: Two Very Different Briefs

Coconut Grove and Coral Gables are often treated as one thing by wedding vendors north of Miami, and that is a mistake. They are fifteen minutes apart and they could not be more different in the way a wedding feels.

Coral Gables is formal, Mediterranean, and built for ceremony. Vizcaya, the Biltmore, the Granada Presbyterian and the country clubs. A wedding here carries a certain architectural weight, and hair that reads as beachy or undone looks out of place. Think structure, a proper part, a polished crown, a chignon with real geometry.

Coconut Grove is green and loose and slightly bohemian. The Kampong, the Barnacle, the various garden venues under enormous trees. Here the light is dappled, the air is thick, and a style with softness reads as correct rather than careless. A tight, formal updo in the Grove looks like it came from a different wedding.

Both share a Miami problem: traffic. The drive from Palm Beach to Coral Gables is ninety minutes on a good day and significantly more on a Friday afternoon. For a Miami wedding I either build the travel into the timeline and arrive the night before, or I bring a team that is already there. I will not gamble a wedding morning on I-95.

Both also share the humidity, which in Miami runs higher than the island. Dade County in June is a different climate than Palm Beach County in June, and the styling has to account for it.

Worth the drive? For the right venue, absolutely. Vizcaya at golden hour is worth an early alarm.
