Choosing Bridal Hair Accessories: What Makes Them Look Expensive

One focal object, matched metal, and scale against your head

December 4, 2026

Hair clips, combs, ribbons, and pins are where bridal hair becomes personal, and they are also where a beautiful style quietly goes wrong. Here is how to choose well.

The one-object rule. A style should have one focal accessory. A single pearl comb. A silk ribbon tied at a low chignon. One gold pin. Two accessories compete and the eye cannot settle, which reads as less expensive than either would alone.

Match the metal to the jewelry, not the dress. If you are wearing gold, the pin should be gold. This sounds obvious and it is the most common mismatch I see, usually a silver comb with gold earrings.

Consider scale against your head, not against the accessory on its own. A large flower works on a bride with a lot of hair and a big silhouette, and overwhelms fine hair. A delicate pin disappears in a voluminous textured bun. Try it in person.

Ribbons are the most forgiving and the most versatile. Silk, narrow, tied once with the ends trailing. Inexpensive, photographically beautiful, and easy to remove if you change your mind. Avoid satin, which reads shiny in flash photography.

Placement matters as much as the object. A comb at the back of a low bun is subtle; the same comb at the side of a half-up is a statement. Decide which conversation you are having.

And the practical test: pins and combs must not catch on your veil, your dress, or your hair during the night. Test the combination at your preview. Inquire with your date.
