Can You Wear Your Hair Down at a Florida Wedding?

Every season a bride tells me she wants to wear her hair down, and every season I ask the same question: what time is your ceremony, and is any of it outside?

The honest answer is that down hair in Florida is a real choice with real trade-offs. It's not impossible. It's just not the free option it looks like in photographs.

Here's what actually happens to down hair in Palm Beach County.

Between one and three in the afternoon, the humidity sits high enough that any bend you built will begin to relax within about two hours outdoors. Curls drop first. Then the crown flattens. Then the ends get a little piecey, which is fine and even pretty, but it's not what you planned at eight in the morning.

Salt air accelerates all of it. If your venue is anywhere near the Intracoastal or the ocean, wind will grab the front sections and the ends at the same time. You'll feel it, and you'll start touching it, and touching is what turns soft into stringy.

So what do I do for down-hair brides?

I build a half-up base. Even if you want ninety percent of your hair falling down, I pin the front and the crown. That keeps the shape and gives wind something to work against.

I set with a light hold at the root, not the ends. Roots hold shape. Ends just need moisture.

I accept a slightly undone finish. A down style that starts pristine has nowhere to go. One that starts with a little texture looks better at hour eight.
