This is the question I get in almost every consultation with an oceanfront bride, and the answer is yes, with three conditions. The conditions are not about wind, which is the thing everyone worries about. Wind is manageable. The real issues are salt, structure, and how long you want to look like yourself.
Salt is first. Sea air carries moisture and mineral, and both go to work on a smooth blowout. Within an hour, hair that was polished at the hotel starts to take on texture it did not have. For some brides that is gorgeous and exactly the point. For a bride who spent three months picturing sleek, it is a slow disappointment. If you want down and controlled, we pre-treat with a humidity-blocking cream and finish with a light sealant, and we style with a firmer set than feels natural in the chair.
Structure is second. Hair down with nothing holding it means every hug, every gust, and every veil lift moves the whole shape. We always build in a small hidden pin set at the temples, invisible from the front, that keeps the face framed when the wind does what wind does. Photographers will thank you. So will your mother.
Third is you. Some brides genuinely stop feeling like themselves with their hair up. If that is you, please wear it down. A photo of you looking like a stranger in a beautiful updo is worse than a photo of you with one strand loose.
The version we build most often is a half-up: soft waves through the length, both sides pinned back at the ear, a veil anchored at the crown so it lifts away from your face rather than across it. It photographs as hair down and behaves like hair up.
What we don't recommend is hair down plus a long cathedral veil plus a strapless gown on the sand. That is three separate soft elements with no anchor, and the photos show it.
