Here is the thing: she is not being difficult. She is being honest, and she is usually right about her own hair. My job is to make her look like a better version of herself, not like a guest at someone else's wedding.
So I ask three questions. What do you like about your hair on a good day. What do you hate. And what is the shortest amount of time you are willing to sit here. All three answers are useful and none of them are rude.
For short hair, the answer is usually a beautiful blow-dry with a soft bend, or a tucked-back style with one visible detail. Both take twenty minutes and honor her cut. For the braid-hater, waves that are actually styled rather than vaguely curled. For the woman who says do whatever, I pick something I know photographs well and give her a specific description so she is not surprised by the mirror.
What I will not do is insist. A bridesmaid who hates her hair is a bridesmaid who will look unhappy in every photograph on your wedding day, and that is on me.
