Headbands had a decade off and they are back in a way that is genuinely useful for brides, because they solve a problem nothing else solves: how to look polished with hair that is mostly down.
A pearl-embellished band, a wide padded velvet band, a sculptural gold piece, a simple covered band in ivory. Each does something different, and the differences matter more than the trend does.
Pearl bands are the most bridal and the most forgiving. They sit well on hair with a little volume at the crown and they read as jewelry rather than accessory, which means they work with a veil and with a gown that already has detail. The one rule: keep the earrings small if the band is pearl. Two jewelry moments near each other compete.
Padded velvet bands are the choice for a bride who wants softness and a bit of retro. They need hair with body, because a velvet band on flat hair looks like a headband on a swimmer. They photograph beautifully in low light and they hold their shape all night.
Sculptural metal pieces are the editorial option, and the most demanding. They need hair that is smooth and controlled. On textured hair they look like an accident. On sleek hair they look like a decision. If you want one, plan the style around it, not the other way around.
Simple covered bands are the quietest and often the most useful: a way to keep a soft style in place and to hide the anchor point of a veil. We use these more than brides realize, usually under something else.
Practical note: any band should be secured with two pins at the sides, hidden under hair. Bands slide on smooth hair, and a band that has moved two inches by the reception is the most common version of this look going wrong.
